Around the House

I started working on the countertop last night by sanding it and masking off the cabinets and sink.  However, this morning in the daylight there seemed to be some spots that were not "deglossed" so I resanded everything again.  As you can see the kitchen is a huge mess.  But, with my mom away on vacation I figured it was the best time to get this done.  The plan is to do the base coat and chips today, then tomorrow the protective top coat.  The color I chose for the countertop was Onyx.  The back splash tiles won't be put up this week.  Since Rustoleum Countertop Transformations says it's fully cured in 7 days, I'm going to hold off and only start cutting and preparing the backerboard for installation.

Here are the tiles that will be going on the backsplash.

With the kitchen in disarray for the next couple days, yesterday I cooked a whole chicken with vegetables and potatoes in the crockpot.  I also prepared these wonderful muffins to go with my morning coffee: http://velvetlava.blogspot.com/2009/02/i-am-now-in-muffin-loop.html   They really are awesome.  The problem is trying to stick to just one muffin in the morning.

Currently there are several projects on the burner. I'm remodeling our kitchen.  Added and/or replaced some cabinets.  I'm using Rustoleum's Cabinet Transformations, and Rustoleum's Countertop Transformations.  I'm also reorganizing the pantry and all our pantry containers transitioning from plastic to glass.

I built a wall unit in the living room, but haven't constructed the overhead lighting simply because I haven't come up with the ideal design to complete the project.  However, the other day I saw a DIY on floating shelf design and now plan to use that design on the top of the unit.

In one of the bedrooms  I built a wall unit to hold the 29 gallon freshwater aquarium, and being a stickler for matching furniture decided to just build all the bedroom furnishings.  The pieces for dresser drawers and storage were unstained pantry and kitchen drawer cabinets.  But the closet doors, nightstands and bed frame with head and foot boards are all being hand built.  The head and foot boards are put together as well as one of the closet doors.  Nightstand design is still being contemplated. Once everything is built and well sanded, then all will be stained and finished at the same time.

In the yard we've used an outdoor gazebo with a canvas top and fold-up metal sides.  But the taking down in winter and setting up in spring has become cumbersome, not to mention it's about reached the end of its life.  So I've been designing a screened in gazebo to put up in its place.

With winter soon approaching and the success of last year's greenhouse, a bigger and better one is  being designed.  Bigger because last year's 3 foot ornamental banana trees are now 8 feet tall.  The design is to try and incorporate both the garden and the screened patio next to it into one enclosed space.

With my mom heading out in a month or so for a two week vacation, I plan to focus all my efforts in the kitchen to at least finish the upper cabinets, the countertop and backsplash before she returns.
